The trend of student dissertation research cannot be separated from the scientific trends that develop at the institution, in addition to other factors such as political, social, and cultural. This paper aims to determine the trend of dissertation research for PAI doctoral students at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin with a focus on: paradigms, strategies, and research methods used.
The data source for this research is the dissertation of the PAI doctoral student at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin from 2017-2020. The approach used is qualitative and quantitative, in which qualitative is to explore and investigate the paradigms, strategies, and methods of student dissertation research, while quantitative is to find out statistically the trend of dissertation research. The data were analyzed using the framework created by John W. Cresswell.
The results of this study indicate that the research paradigm for the dissertation of doctoral students PAI UIN Antasari Banjarmasin between 2017-2020 is quite varied. Of the four research paradigm models expressed by Creswell, there are three underlying research paradigms, namely positivism, constructivism and pragmatism. Meanwhile, another research paradigm, namely advocacy or participatory, did not develop in the PAI doctoral program at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. The research strategy uses quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods, but specifically the quantitative approach is still limited to non-experimental research or surveys. While experimental research is still not developed. The methods used are quite varied according to the paradigm and strategy. Among the four research paradigms: positivism, constructivism, advocacy, and pragmatism, constructivism is the most dominant. Meanwhile, pragmatism and positivism paradigms are still lacking, and advocacy paradigms do not exist at all.
Therefore, it is necessary to develop a different scientific paradigm, especially the social criticism scientific paradigm which is the basis for the advocacy or participatory research paradigm.
